JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Air force spokesman Bambang Sulistyo said the number of victims of C-130 Hercules crash accident in Madiun increased to 98 persons as of Wednesday at 15.45.

"Some bodies will be flown to Jakarta. We have yet to be informed on the precise number," he told the press at the Halim Perdanakusumah Air Force Base, Jakarta, Wednesday.

The C-130 Hercules military plane carrying 110 people crashed into a few locals' houses and burst into flames in Geplak village, Madiun, East Java province.

It's reported that three locals were killed due to the accident. Legislator from Commission I of House of Representatives Theo L Sambuaga said that accident shows that the government has never really paid a serious attention on the weapon system's main instrument (alutsista). He then urged the government to do an audit on alutsista. "It's urgent." he said.
The country's air force has long complained of being underfunded and handicapped by a recently lifted U.S. ban on weapons sales. It has suffered a series of accidents, including a Fokker 27 plane that crashed into the Hussein Sastranegara Air Force Base's hangar last month, killing all 24 onboard.
